Who We are

We are Education Development Initiative (EDI), a team of change makers who strongly believe that skilled hands-on work and collaboration paves the way to prosperity.

We are dedicated to transforming lives through vocational training. 2009 until 2024 our passionate team has worked tirelessly to support Buwere Vocational College (BVC). Early 2025 we started upgrading it to Green Vocational College Buwama as we shifted to Mbizzinya, next to Buwama Town. There we started building new premises on our own land and use this opportunity to adjust to the challenges of today’s world. We are teachers, university students, administrators, a priest and an engineer who mainly serve our purpose as volunteers.

Our approach

Our Mission
Build an environment where young talents flourish and combine for the enhancement of all
  • Equip young women and men with skills that enable them to earn a decent living
  • Empower the students with social and entrepreneurial skills to become agents of their own development
  • Sensitize on the reasons of climate change and activities of mitigation
Our Vision
Imagine a world where the educational system is effective and based on collaboration
  • Equal access to vocational and professional training for rich and poor
  • Abundant opportunities for both men and women of all religious and ethnic backgrounds
  • Development focused on social, ecological and economic improvement for all
  • Careful inclusion/reconciliation of tradition and modernity
  • Protection of nature and health as the normal way of living

History

Our journey began in the late 1990s with our founding member Peter Kafuuma, a secondary school teacher, who understood the importance of vocational training.

In 2004 we started on the premises by the then abandoned Divinity College of the Anglican Church at Buwere. In the beginning we had one vocation only: construction. Over the years … workshop-facilities built. Buwere Vocational College developed into a beacon of hope, while we continually adapted and expanded our program.

When the Anglican Church informed us, that they cannot prolong our stay, since they need the premises for their own teaching, we bought our own land within a range of about 10 kilometers. The shift in January/February 2025 is a continuation of the basic vocational trainings as well as a new beginning. The Green Vocational College Buwama puts sensitization to climate change – its challenges and its chances – on the agenda

Outlook

With our partner in Germany we bought land in the village of Mbizinnya, also part of Town Buwama on the Kampala – Masaka highway.

We thank the Anglican Church of Uganda for accomodating us as we are developing new premises in Mbizinnya. The new premises – however improvised they are in the beginning – are going to be developed step by step. Ecological methods of construction and energy supply shall be implemented, while all students are exposed to principles of “zero-waste”, up-cycling and basic principles of organic farming. GVC seeks cooperation with innovative and climate-friendly enterprises to skill a qualified work-force and encourage self-employment. GVC aims at combining vocational training, community development, networking and cultural events.

New members and supporters who fall in love with this goal and are ready to contribute are always welcome!
